A new site was established in 2025 at Sherwood on a shallow sandy soil previously ameliorated by delving and lime incorporation. The trial aims to explore the nitrogen and systems benefits of a range of legumes as alternatives to the commonly grown faba bean. Five blocks of legumes were sown on 10/6/25 including Mintaro Subclover, Vulga vetch, PBA Thunder lentils, PBA Royal chickpeas and PBA Samira faba beans; all except the chickpeas have established well. Post harvest (2025) and pre-sowing (2026) mineral N will be measured to quantify nitrogen contributions and contrasting nitrogen strategies will be applied in wheat (2026) and canola (2027) to assess yield and economic outcomes. This field visit will provide agronomic discussions on the benefits and challenges of growing alternative pulse crops in mixed farming systems.

Free to attend.
