Red Meat & Wool Growth Program - Producer Technology GroupsDate:
Project code: CSP00203 Project manager: Elke Hocking and Emma Peters Project duration: July 2020 to May 2022 About the projectKey livestock technology areas of interest to group This group of producers is interested in quantifying the economic gains possible through utilising eID in the objective measurements of both sheep and cattle within their red meat enterprises to make more informed breeding and selection decisions. This would include objective measurements of liveweight, growth rate and pregnancy data. This group is just starting to undertake financial benchmarking of their business and will be looking at profitability within their beef and sheep enterprises. The group would like to investigate the following: use of eID in cattle and lamb to monitor growth rates to target markets, compliance to consumer specifications (feedlot, processor – carcase and MSA); use of eID to monitor pregnancy rates in beef and sheep (including preg status, CS, calf performance); use of new labour saving technology: walk over weighing/optiweigh, individual dosing of animal health treatments based on weight and remote water monitoring; use of technology to monitor pasture quality and quantity (CIBO, Pastures from Space). In order to demonstrate economic benefits, analysis from industry experts will be conducted as well as extension of previous work to the group (MLA Project code: Maximising the value of existing technology for sheep producers - L.LSM.0011, Hamish Dickson AgriPartner Consulting).
