Russian Wheat Aphid (RWA) Update

Dr Greg Baker (SARDI Entomology) gave an update on Thursday 16th June to growers and agronomists at the Keith Institute.

In the past week, the status of this insect pest has gone from eradication to a control approach where management techniques are implemented to manage the pest at a local level once thresholds have been reached. As the season progresses, there will be continual updates provided.

Even though the status has been changed to management, SARDI still need Russian Wheat Aphid samples to be submitted; particularly when located in an area not already identified.

The ‘biotype’ of aphid needs to be identified to ensure that future plant breeding programs are targeting the correct RWA resistance genes for the aphid population present.
