Pulse Check Groups Pre-Harvest Meetings

The GRDC Southern Pulse Extension project, provides a collaborative opportunity to increase the knowledge of growers and advisers on sustainable pulse production, improving the Southern Region's capacity to maximise future growth and profitability opportunities.

The three-year project will develop farmer discussion groups in areas where lentils and/or chickpeas are not commonly grown or low lentil/chickpea production areas. Prior experience in growing pulses is not required as the purpose of the group is to increase regional knowledge and capacity in pulse production.

This is a really good opportunity for Upper SE growers who are new to pulses, to have access to two experts – Brendan Wallis and Scott Hutchings – four times a year – to talk about productive pulse production. The first meeting was at Keith on Wednesday, November 8.

The morning involved discussion on;

  • Desiccation for both lentils and chickpeas - covering timing, chemicals and rates
  • Pulse markets – Local and global influences that are impacting on price
  • Storage and markets – high value commodities have higher risk. Need to ensure that on farm hygiene is paramount
  • Header setup and fire risk management – insurance and checking your policy, make sure you are blowing your header down every box full, ensure you have a fire plan in place to minimise risk
  • Retaining seed –  there was good discussion around areas to keep seed and what to avoid.
