 The MacKillop Group schedules a study tour biannually into our program. Our destination in 2011 was the southern Eyre Peninsula region of South Australia, with 14 participants. The region supports some very progressive farming operations which we were able to visit and hear of their experiences in the agricultural industry .
The purpose of the tour was to travel to a region similar to our own to help us increase our understanding and awareness of some of the innovative farming systems that have been developed and are being utilised by growers in other areas of the state.
With increased knowledge and a better understanding of the issues faced in other regions, we will better be able to implement strategies and adjust our own farming practices, ensuring we remain both sustainable and profitable while not adversely affecting the natural resources in the future. The benefit of travelling with other farmers from our own region can also not be under-rated, we learnt a lot more about what happens in our own back yard by simply spending time with other growers.
As our members are predominantly mixed farmers, we visited a diverse range of operations. We were also able to utilise our links with other farming groups, particularly LEADA to learn more about the management and operations of their group.
